Are you stuck in a self-improvement trap? Many of us have the desire to improve ourselves, our relationships, and our lives. I started on the spiritual path by going to psychoanalysis for years to better understand myself and my relationships. It eventually launched me into a deeper exploration of Consciousness and, when I was ready, spiritual teachers began to appear.
Those who cannot get individualized guidance often begin by reading books, taking workshops, doing guided meditations, or joining groups to heal their wounds and become their best selves. Yet after years of effort, they may still feel stuck in a cycle of self-criticism and striving to fix something in themselves, never quite arriving at the wholeness for which they yearn. That’s because the very idea that you need fixing is a trap.
Though often well-intentioned, the self-improvement movement rests on a hidden assumption: that something is wrong with you. That you are broken, incomplete, or somehow “not enough” as you are. From this belief arises an endless list of things to correct, upgrade, or perfect. It can become an addiction to “healing.” It’s not the self-improvement movement per se that is at fault; it’s just how the ego-mind works, making us feel deficient to control our perception.
As we work on ourselves, it is empowering to make progress and observe the things that used to trigger us to no end with a lot more detachment and equanimity. This emotional freedom is a nice perk, and although that’s not what spirituality is ultimately about, it can lead to our spiritual freedom if we’re willing to delve deeper.
Spirituality is self-knowledge, which brings the awareness that this “self” (ego) we keep trying to fix is only a mental construct—a collection of memories, roles, and identifications. You could polish it endlessly, but it could never become real or complete because the ego-self is not who you truly are (see Why Spiritual Growth Is Like Climbing the Love-Consciousness Pyramid).
Healing the Illusion of a Broken Self
You are the conscious Presence or Awareness behind all experience, which is never incomplete and was never broken to begin with. It is an eternal, infinite Consciousness Continuum. The real work, then, is not to fix yourself, but to see the false identity you have attached to for what it is: a collection of outdated beliefs and mental fluctuations that come and go unless you hold on to them by feeding them your attention and energy.
Oftentimes people don’t realize how much they fixate on their traumas, resentments, or painful memories, which prevents them from letting go. Isn’t that what healing is really about? But how do you step out of this ingrained self-defeating loop of false ideas about yourself and others? Here are a few guidelines.
- Notice the Inner Fixer
Start by becoming aware of the voice inside that’s always judging something: your emotions, your habits, your body, your past, your interactions. This voice often sounds reasonable: “If I could just heal this part of me, I’d be free and happy.”
Pause and listen. Who is trying to fix you and why? Is it your ego-mind’s idea of who you should be? And how can it be different from who you are? Are there two “selves,” one right and one wrong, or one whole and one broken?
When you recognize that this “inner fixer,” which is really your inner bully (your sense of otherness), is another aspect of the ego that thrives on the illusion of inadequacy or deficiency, you create space to release the story of a false “me.” In that space, freedom begins.
- Stop Resisting What You Feel
The ego resists discomfort; it wants to transform pain into comfort as quickly as possible. But healing doesn’t happen through resistance; it happens by embracing what is as it is.
Next time an old emotion or insecurity arises, hold it back and resist the urge to follow, analyze, or fix it. Instead, breathe and feel it fully, without labeling it as something wrong. Then open up to embrace it and understand what it means in the context of the situation or even of your life.
When you allow what is, without trying to change it, your awareness transforms it naturally, just as sunlight dissolves shadows without effort.
- Redefine the Meaning of Growth
True growth is not about becoming a “better” or “perfect” person; it’s about becoming more conscious of who you are. Instead of ideas such as,“I must fix myself,” try “I choose to know myself.” Instead of ideas such as,“I have to heal this wound,” try “I embrace this part of me with compassion and love.”
When your perception arises from love instead of fear or judgment, self-improvement becomes self-realization. You stop striving for perfection and begin resting in presence.
- Trust the Divine Intelligence of Life
You don’t have to manage or micromanage anything. Life unfolds on its own, promoting your growth if you stop interfering. Trust the rhythm of your own evolution. Trust that every challenge, emotion, or obstacle emerges from the spiritual forces guiding you home to yourself.
The more you let go of the need to control, the more life reveals its perfection through and for you.
Remember Who You Really Are
At the heart of all spiritual practice is a simple recognition: You are not and were never broken. I fact, you are the totality of existence.
The inner peace you seek through the endless striving for perfection has always been here, hidden beneath the noise of self-judgment. When you stop trying to improve yourself, you discover that what you’ve been chasing isn’t a better version of you but the timeless Awareness that has been watching all along.
And that awareness is already whole and is who you really are. So contact me today to receive guidance and support as you uncover what gets in the way of this realization so you may enjoy greater emotional and spiritual freedom!
