Life Is a Mirror: Why What Happens to You Is Actually Happening From You

discover how life is a mirror with spiritual counselingLife is a mirror.

There are moments when something painful happens, and the first thing you think is: “Why is this happening to me?” It’s the most human response, and it may feel true, but it is the one question that will keep you stuck longer than anything else, because it rests on the belief that you are separate from your life.

The ego-mind creates the illusion that the world is out there, targeting you, attacking you, rewarding you, or punishing you. That you are the small figure standing in the middle of a story being written by forces you cannot control. But what if life isn’t happening to you at all? What if it is happening from you and as you? This is not a motivational reframing of positive thinking toward a better outcome. It is something much deeper, and once you really see it, nothing will look the same again.

This is what the enlightened sages of all time have emphasized time and again. You are not separate from what you perceive; you are your experience and your experience is you—it’s about you, for you, through you. Think of a mirror. When you stand in front of it, you see your reflection. It may seem as if two people are in the room, but it’s just you there. The reflection isn’t you, but it isn’t separate from you either. It doesn’t exist without you, and it shows you what you’re projecting through your awareness. You are your self, or I-sense, and the rest is your sense of otherness.

If you change your expression, the mirror changes. If you step away or focus on something else, the image disappears. Life works the same way because it is your own mental movie (see Your Life-Movie Is a Dream Within a Dream). Everything that shows up—the relationships that keep you wounded, the opportunities that keep slipping away, or the habits you can’t seem to break—it is all a reflection of something within you: your beliefs, desires, past experiences, unresolved emotions, and so on. Painful situations are not bad luck and they don’t mean that you’re a victim of circumstance, although the ego-mind makes it feel that way.

If You Feel Alone, You Forgot Your True Nature

They are reflections of something that is expressed for you to become increasingly conscious of yourself. Yes, they result from past karma, but it is through your experiences that you uncover what you need to break free from a false, outdated perception that keeps you spinning in the wheel of egoic suffering. It begins with the idea that you are separate—an individual person with an individualized will.

To maintain this delusion, the ego projects itself as a multiplicity of beings, objects, and situations (your sense of otherness). In actuality, Oneness is the true nature of reality. At the deepest level, there is no inside and outside. There is no you over here and others over there. It may appear that way within the paradox of ego and duality, but there is only one living, breathing, conscious whole: One Reality, and you are That.

Your human condition allows you and everyone else to share the human experience, but it also makes you forget your true nature. We come into bodies, into families, into histories and cultures that reinforce the idea that we are separate, vulnerable, and small. That survival depends on defending ourselves from life rather than fully opening up to it. So we spend our days reacting to our own reflections (our otherness) as if they were threats.

Real inner work is about recognizing yourself in what shows up. Not to blame yourself for past negative actions or to believe that it’s because of your “bad thoughts” that life is hard. The work requires becoming genuinely curious about the unfolding of your experience. To go from, “Why is this happening to me?” to something deeper, like, “What is this showing me about myself?”

You Are Your Healer

Divine Consciousness doesn’t waste a single experience. Every frustration, every longing, every moment of beauty that breaks your heart open, it’s all you, experiencing the projection of your dynamic subconscious content in real time. The person who irritates you is showing you something or someone you haven’t made peace with. Your disappointments and betrayals show you where you’ve been blocking love from yourself or holding the belief that you deserve some form of punishment.

However, to gain this high self-awareness, you cannot fixate on others, as your ego would nudge you to do, and instead look at the reflection on the mirror everyone is holding for you. You are far more powerful than you’ve allowed yourself to believe. Once you stop seeing life as something happening to you and start perceiving it as you—your own projection—a quiet yet obvious shift occurs, and your experience changes spontaneously. You stop wishing to be rescued or saved. You stop seeking validation through others and giving your power to circumstances or people.

You start living life from within, anchored in yourself and empowered by the light of the Awareness you truly are. Gradually, you recognize that beneath every story, every wound, every identity you’ve built lies the same Presence that is looking out through every other pair of eyes on this plane. You are no longer alone, for you are One with everything and everyone else. Everything emerges from within you and is projected into your mind, just like when you’re dreaming, except that daily life is a longer dream organized and experienced by the ego.

You Are More Powerful Than You Believe

Through this process, you stop being alone in your longing. You stop being alone in love and begin to feel love for yourself and everyone from a place of acceptance and inner peace, from the understanding that we are all one and the same eternal Self experiencing the same human experience in different ways. You begin to perceive life as love, and love as the irresistible force that moves and transforms everything in your dreamworld (yes, even the painful negative emotions and the cruelty we see out there).

We pretend to be many things: our thoughts, desires, identifications, experiences, accomplishments, disappointments, and so on, but our life-movie helps us to remember who and what we truly are through the pain and challenges we encounter. However, to actually see that your life is not your enemy but an empowering mirror, you need guidance and support to let go of the patterns of perception that keep you spinning in repetitive situations you no longer want.
