Have you felt a new drive to discover your soul purpose in these challenging and confusing times? Most of us start pondering, “Who am I?” and “What is my life about?” in our late 20s, during our first Saturn Return. Then Saturn usually takes us into a new karmic cycle of experience and resolution for the next 30 years, during which we’re supposed to build a career, get married, raise a family, and get clearer about what we want, to become increasingly independent from our family of origin.
But we don’t all follow a standard roadmap or have the same aspirations. Perhaps we don’t want to pursue a specific career or follow the conventional steps to build it, or we may not even have a clue of what we want because we hold many interests. Maybe we don’t want to get married or have children, or maybe life takes us on an unusual or unconventional path. And yet, along the way, the same existential inquiry may stir inside.
This usually happens when the roles we’ve been playing no longer feel like enough or a changing environment seems to demand something different from us. You may have done most or all of the “right” things and checked off the boxes society handed you, but a quiet, persistent voice beneath the busyness of daily life whispers: There must be more to life than this. That whisper is not a sign that something is necessarily wrong; it is your soul calling you to look more deeply within to continue expanding.
The Soul Purpose Confusion
One of the biggest misconceptions I’ve noticed is the belief that our purpose is a single, grand destination, like a title, a career, or a mission statement you discover once and follow till you retire or die. This is the one-track ego-mind’s way of looking at things; always linear, fixed, and external. But your soul purpose is not something you find outside of yourself; it is something you remember as you peel away the layers of conditioning, old wounds, and mental patterns tainting your perception and experience of life.
Besides, there are different levels of purpose. From the daily small goals that give your life order and functional coherence to the big epiphanies and turning points that send you in a new direction, every piece of your story’s puzzle is essential to the whole you—what makes your journey individualized and unique. When you are aligned with your soul purpose, at any level, ideas and impulses emerge organically. You feel their truth, and even if you also feel resistance (which the ego will always create), or encounter unexpected challenges, the certainty of what connects you to yourself remains. You just have to let it mature within you until it’s ready to come into the world.
Why Most People Disconnect From Their Soul Purpose
The ego-mind is a master of disguise and distraction. It keeps you focused on what others say, do, or think; on what you fear losing; and on what you think you should want rather than what you’re genuinely called toward. This is especially true for feminine soul types, because we tend to be highly sensitive, empathic, and attuned to subtle dimensions of reality, but we also carry the responsibility to heal the wounded Feminine on this plane. We’re conditioned to believe that we’re not good enough or that we should only focus on what others need, but we also know intuitively that we have a higher, collective purpose (see Healing the Wounded Feminine: A Call to Reclaim Our Sacred Balance).
These are some common blocks that may be keeping you from following a truly empowering path:
- Unresolved emotional wounds that create a distorted self-perception and make you shrink from your gifts.
- People-pleasing patterns that keep you focused on other people’s needs at the expense of your inner calling.
- Fear of visibility: the deep, often unconscious terror of being truly seen, judged, or rejected for who you really are.
- Spiritual bypassing: using spiritual concepts to rationalize your feelings and avoid the real inner work of healing and transformation.
- The ego’s need for certainty that keeps you waiting until everything feels “safe” before you dare stepping into your authentic expression.
These are part of the human experience, but they need to be addressed consciously, with patience and compassion, if you are to live in true alignment.
What True Alignment Feels Like
True alignment is not a state of perpetual bliss or the absence of difficulties. It is not about “manifesting” a perfect life or following a prescribed spiritual formula. True alignment is an inner sense of connection and orientation—a steady, quiet knowing that you are authentically moving with life rather than against it. By surrendering the ego, you follow the path of least resistance to achieve your function in this dreamworld.
When you are in alignment:
- Your choices feel congruent with your deepest values, not driven by fear, guilt, or pressure.
- Your work—whether professional, creative, or personal—expresses your unique gifts, talents, and values. (Understanding your Soul Signature is essential to launch a service-oriented business.)
- Your relationships nourish rather than deplete you, because you’re not afraid to show up as yourself.
- Challenges are experienced as invitations to grow rather than punishments or failures.
- There is a sense of trust and peace that persists even in the midst of uncertainty.
Alignment is the result of an intentional, ongoing self-exploration. It is not a destination you arrive at once and never revisit. It is a profound, dynamic relationship with yourself.
Steps To Discover Your Soul Purpose and Live in Alignment
- Turn Inward and Begin the Journey of Self-Discovery
Scanning the internet, reading self-help books, or asking someone else what you should do with your life may be useful at times, but it’s not how you find your soul purpose. It lives inside you, beneath the constant noise of the ego-mind, the layers of current and past expectations, and the stories you’ve told yourself about who you’re supposed or allowed to be.
Turn your attention inward and ask: What lights me up? What feels most authentic? What have I been afraid to acknowledge or embrace about myself? The answers may not come right away or all at once, but they will come.
- Heal the Emotional Wounds That Block Your Path
Your past is just a collection of memories, of energetic imprints that shape your perception and experience of reality because you continue to identify with them. Childhood wounds, relational traumas, and family dynamics become aspects of your egoic sense of otherness, subconsciously directing your choices while keeping you emotionally stuck in the past—that is, until you bring them into the light of Awareness.
This is the foundation of my Swan Method: healing means leaving the past behind by recognizing how it colors your reality—your personalized life-movie—so you can turn inward to clear distorted, outdated ideas about yourself to be fully present in the moment. It’s deep inner work that takes courage and perseverance, but it is the most liberating work you will ever do.
- Master the Ego-Mind by Recognizing Its Patterns
The ego-mind is made of the past and feels safe in the familiar, which makes it very resistant to growth and change. When you begin to pursue an empowering purpose in earnest, your egoic sense of otherness will generate doubts, procrastination, self-sabotage, fear, and all kinds of dramas to stop you. But this is a sign that you are moving toward something real, in greater alignment with yourself, and it is worth piercing though your resistance to keep going.
Awakening the Inner Witness—the ability to observe your thoughts, reactions, patterns, and interactions without identifying with them—is a vital skill to cultivate on this path. Self-awareness is love, and it is through self-awareness that you begin to distinguish between the ego’s fearful voice and your quiet, intuitive wisdom.
- Follow the Thread of Your Unique Gifts
Your Soul Signature is intimately connected to those things that come easily to you, that light you up from the inside, or that others consistently recognize in you. These gifts are the specific resources and qualities you’re meant to bring into this lifetime to contribute to the collective in some way.
Ask yourself: What do I do effortlessly that others may find difficult? When do I feel most alive, most truly myself? What kind of impact do I want to have in the world?
Do not dismiss your inner resources as “too ordinary” because you take them for granted, or “not good enough” by comparing yourself to others. The ego-mind will always compare and judge, but you’re here to uncover your profound value as an individualized expression of Divine Consciousness.
- Commit to a Spiritual Practice and Trust the Unfolding
Living in alignment requires a daily commitment to your inner life. A spiritual practice creates the conditions for deep guidance to emerge. It quiets the noise of the ego-mind, reconnects you with your true nature, and opens you to receive the clarity and inspiration meant to lead you to your divine destiny.
Trust the unfolding of your path, even when it doesn’t look like what you imagined. Our soul roadmap is rarely linear. It winds through unexpected terrain, calls you into uncomfortable growth, and often leads you exactly where you need to go through surprising—and often painful—doorways. Surrender is not weakness. It is the highest form of spiritual maturity and a direct path to real inner peace.
