This eclipse season is likely the most eventful or life-altering time of the year. First, we have a Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 12th, and then a Lunar Eclipse in Pisces on the 28th, which is the most challenging. If you are on the path of these eclipses, I’d recommend you read a previous post: How To Benefit Spiritually From a Solar (or Lunar) Eclipse. I’ll explore the first one today.
The Sun is our identity, our consciousness, and Leo is also our identity. Not the instinctual drive to exist of Aries, but the aspects we identify with and wear on our sleeve: “I am sensitive, creative, a parent, an artist, a teacher,” and so on. When the lunar principle overrides the Sun, our conscious identity gets flooded with unconscious material that we may not be aware of, or may have neglected, or for some reason decided it wasn’t that important.
Eclipses flip the script. Life suddenly moves in an unexpected direction that, although intense, often ends up being a needed realignment. Now, Leo isn’t just another sign. It is wired to the Sun itself, the aspect concerned with being someone, or being seen and valuable. So, when the sun goes dark in the sign that’s supposed to shine the brightest, an unsettling yet essential question may come up: “If I’m not what I thought I was, then who am I?”
Your Identity Is Not As Solid As you Thought
Most people build an identity the way you’d build a house on familiar ground. A job title. Your role in the family. The way people describe you. The version of yourself you perform so well that you forget it’s a performance. It works fine for the most part—until something shakes it. And a Leo eclipse shakes it. Not because Leo energy is fragile, but because it is the part of you invested in a particular story about who you are (see The Stories We Tell Ourselves: The Hidden Cost of a Fixed Identity).
Eclipses tend to pull back the curtain on whatever we’ve quietly decided is non-negotiable about ourselves. So, if you feel a bit undone, questioning a role you’ve played for years, noticing that a compliment or a criticism lands harder than it should, or wondering if the “you” that you believe to be and present to the world is authentic, well, that’s the eclipse doing exactly what it does.
However, the identity that’s being shaken is not the real you. You are the one who’s aware of the identity being shaken. Think about that for a moment. If your sense of self can wobble, change, even collapse, but something in you is still there watching it happen, then that Presence is real, but the rest is not; it is fluctuations of the mind. Like the Sun itself, you are the Light illuminating life. You are not made of temporary job titles or roles or reputations. And you are not that fragile either. Most people never notice this, because they’re too busy managing their story to notice anything else, but an eclipse interrupts the story just long enough for you to catch a glimpse of yourself.
The Self Behind the Self
That’s the beginning of real freedom: freedom from a fixed identity and the outdated tendencies of perception that have shaped it. These show up in ordinary, and sometimes in embarrassing ways. For instance, you get passed over for something you were sure you deserved, and instead of just disappointment, there’s something deeper that emerges. You realize how much of your confidence depends on being noticed or validated, and it makes you flinch. You want to understand the wounded needs that make you feel this way and be done with them.
It could also have to do with a relationship, because Leo rules romance, children, and lovers. There may be conflicts that demand greater flexibility to maintain the relationship with a lover or a child. Or you may be forced to make a complete reassessment of what keeps you in certain dynamics, what roles you play, and how you really feel about that. Like I said before, an eclipse produces a realignment on some level. We can expect a good number of breakups, makeups, engagements, weddings, and birth announcements starting in August.
A Word of Caution About the Solar Eclipse in Leo
In ancient Babylonia, rulers observed that eclipses were followed by important events, like the death of a king or queen, the birth of a future king, the beginning or the end of a war, and so on. As a protection, sky observers were appointed to study the movement of the stars and predict eclipses to protect the king. This is how Western Astrology was born. They came up with a “Substitute King” ritual by placing an ordinary man in the role of the king during eclipses. Once the danger passed, he was put to death to fulfill the expected omen.
This exchange reflects the very nature of an eclipse as a reversal. Beyond the mythology, it is a window of opportunity when the old order is interrupted, allowing different or bigger choices to emerge. The Masculine (the Sun, or consciousness) is overpowered by the Feminine (the Moon, or emotions and intuition). The roles are switched in our perception and/or our relationships.
In Vedic Astrology, eclipses are seen as Ketu (the Lunar South Node) and Rahu (the North Node) swallowing the Sun or Moon in revenge for being split after attempting to steal the nectar of immortality. Ketu is the body while Rahu is the head of this mythological monster thief. Eclipses are consider very inauspicious (that’s the reason for all the recommendations on the blog I mentioned above), but they may bring negative aspects to the surface for karmic cleansing.
For this reason, it is not a good idea to start or make critical decisions about projects, relationships, jobs, or anything important during the days surrounding a solar eclipse. Whatever you start is bound to flip. Whenever the Sun is hidden by the Moon, your consciousness is diminished, so you may not see the full picture. You may neglect the details because they’re fuzzy, or you may feel rushed to do something to avoid the discomfort of letting go of old identifications or attachments. Something always remains hidden. This is true with all eclipses, but even more so with a solar eclipse in Leo, which is like a double eclipse.
But overall, the Solar eclipse in Leo is an invitation to loosen your grip a little more and letting go of the self-images, identifications, and relationships that keep you stuck in the past, reinforcing wounded needs, traumas, and illusions instead of recognizing who you are and what is your purpose now. The two weeks between eclipses can bring up a lot of emotions, but don’t get frustrated if the new vision for your life is not clear yet. Make space for it and delve more deeply within.
