Step Out Of The Emotional Hamster Wheel

develop emotional freedom with spiritual counseling & coachingDo you sometimes feel like you’re pedaling away in life without getting any traction? Perhaps you’ve been trying to reach a goal or overcome an obstacle; maybe your physical body is out of balance and you can’t get it back on track; or you’ve been working on yourself for what seems like a long time and yet life brings back around some of the issues you think you should be done with by now.

The thing is, you may be moving forward and things may be changing, because life never stops flowing, but your ego-mind may get so fixated on the goal, the attainment, the future satisfaction that it dismisses the value of your process. Without signs and landmarks as reassurance that you’re on the right path, or a road map clearly showing you the destination, it makes you feel lost and confused.

Your soul is constantly nudging you to reconnect to your inner voice, to heal the past, to find the meaning behind the pieces of your life puzzle, but the ego-mind pulls even harder to keep you stuck in familiar but self-defeating emotional patterns. Since your life-movie is a projection of your perception, it often appears to remain in the same place, or a very similar one, even though it’s always filled with new possibilities. But these possibilities lie beyond the mind, in the realm of the Divine Feminine, which is your creative power.

Everything in life is a process, and things happen in spiraling cycles. For instance, if you want to learn something new, you start with great enthusiasm, devoting time and energy to your new endeavor. Then you’re likely to lose momentum when the ego-mind realizes there’s no instant gratification and mastering what you’re learning is going to take a while and a whole lot of discipline. Like most people, you may quit right after this point, if you can’t get past your own resistance to grow.

Self-awareness triggers even more resistance, since it’s a threat to the control of ego, which can be likened to a wounded child archetype (see Growing Out Of The Wounded Child Archetype). Ego wants things now because it has a hard time postponing the gratification of the senses; deferring fulfillment requires emotional flexibility and maturity. But if you persevere, with discipline and continuity, past your frustration, even when it looks like you’re not moving, then something eventually clicks and you shift into a slightly higher cycle on the Consciousness spiral that is your life.

When you appreciate what you’ve accomplished and learned along the way, no matter how much or how little, and more than anything, value the path and the process even more than the destination, you’ll find yourself in a much freer emotional place. Like any desire, a destination is a dangling carrot helping you move your cart forward; once you get there, you’ll come up with a new one, because the spiral of your destiny never stops and there’s a whole lot more to integrate and learn about yourself as you go.

The key here is to do things for their own sake, with no agendas or expectations, and recognizing that if you feel frustrated or discouraged it means you’re fighting your life rather than being connected to and flowing with it. So instead of holding on to the wounded child archetype that wants short-cuts and quick-fixes, embrace the divine child within that is innocent, playful, and filled with enthusiasm and curiosity for life. This child trusts it unconditionally, anxious to discover what it has in store, for she knows she’s loved, supported, and guided by her Divine Mother at the core of her soul.

The ego-mind creates attachments and expectations to keep you trapped in the past, coloring your perception with unresolved emotional issues. You can either continue wishing and hoping for something better, yet unable to let go of what holds you back—stuck in an emotional hamster wheel—or you can step up to your purpose with clarity and confidence, by mustering the courage to do what it takes to become emotionally free.
